Hasankeyf built solely from stone, is situated on the banks of Tigris River and 150 meters high from the riverbed. The city is like anopen-air museum with amazing buildings everywhere. Most of the city has been carved into the rocks and it gives the feeling of Cappadocia.

The original name of the city was “Hisno Koyfa” which means “Rock Castle”. The castle in the city is the highest point and gives a perfect panorama of the city with Tigris RiverRomans built the castle and as it is located on a very high point, it was almost impossible to attack.

The city has a lot of Muslim buildings such as El-Rizk Mosque, The Great Mosque, Suleyman and Koc Mosques. All of these mosques are dating back to 14th an 15th century when Eyyubids controlled the city. All of the mosques show the Arabic architectural characteristics with round minarets.

The most amazing one is The El-Rizk Mosque with the amazing minaret and portal gate. The portal gate is unique in Turkey as it is has the reliefs of the 99 different features of Allah. The floral designs on the gate are also worth seeing.

The city has a new bridge to pass to the other side; there is also the ancient bridge, which offers very picturesque scenery.

Because of a dam project, which arises the level of Tigris River for another 150 meters, the city is under the danger of being lost. There is the risk of leaving this city under the water if the project does not stop.
